Anyone Got A Bridge For Sale?

Well, I did it. I purchased a mobile home in Iowa. Yes, I bought a non-permanent dwelling in Tornado Alley.

I ran the numbers on rent+pet fees over the four years, and $32K for rent compared to $18K for this place -- which I could sell later -- seemed like a no-brainer.

And to soothe your concerns about tornadoes (okay, MINE), you see that sidewalk in the photo that runs down the back of my place? It leads to the storm shelter. I dunno...I like adventure. I guess the tornado angle is my way of injecting some risk into an otherwise responsible life choice (going back to school, etc.).

I guess you could say it's more like a Fisher Price My-First-Home. The park that it's in takes care of the lawn, SNOW REMOVAL (a super bonus for my winter-averse California-come-New Mexico roots), water and trash. PLUS, I get free cable. Ahh...the joys of ownership with the responsibilities of apartment living. Perfect-O.

So there it is. I have embraced my inner yokel. Join me next time, when you can hear me say:

Cletus, git yer dawg off the shed!

Oh my. Sounds like a good financial decision...as long as your new casa doesn't blow away. Ha ha. Keep us apprised of interactions with all your new neighbors. Sure to be good blog fodder. :)

When I first decided to share this, I braced myself for the trailer-related ridicule.

What I did not count on was how big a deal it was that I didn't get a double-wide!

For the record, my butt's as much double-wide as I can handle.

Okay, so I so want to make fun of you, but:
A. It actually makes a lot of sense.
B. I have taken to listening to country music (all the time) and am two Saturdays and a pair of cowboy boots away from actually watching a NASCAR race.
C. You own - I rent. A studio.

So you win. Yay for you!!!!

OHMYGOSH! I love it! Seriously, for some reason I have always thought of trailer parks as quaint little neighborhoods...perhaps I am a bit trashy on the inside, does that really surprise you?!

Besides, from someone who has been through a few tornadoes, I have always thought it would be nice to wait it out in a storm shelter with others rather than by myself in a basement or bathtub. Don't think I haven't sat in a basement and wondered, "if a tree falls on my house, what if no one remembers to dig me out?" Yes, my craziness astounds even me sometimes...

And, of course, if you don't make it to the storm shelter, you will just end up in Oz, what could be better than technicolor?!

Again, love it! Can't wait to meet the neighbors!

Congratulations on being a homeowner - no snarky comments from me! Why did you move to Iowa, anyway? I'm guessing something to do with school?

Okay, well, here goes. I did college in Vermillion, South Dakota. I bought an old home out in a tiny country town for $2,500. That's not a typo. I never said, "Cletus, git yer dawg off the shed!" but I did hear such pithy things as,

"Well, aren't you just all fancy, goin' to college and all?"

"Are you coming to the rocky mountain oyster feed? They aren't really oysters, you know. They're pigs' testacles."

"You know, that isn't the smell of pig manure. It's the smell of money."

Enjoy. Bwahahahahah.
